Why Village Building Makes RPGs Stick

Why Village Building Makes RPGs Stick

June 26, 2026 · Martin Kaspar

I have played dozens of mobile RPGs that forgot to give me a reason to keep going past the numbers going up. Ashgrove Saga reminded me what fixes that: a place that visibly changes because of you.

When your battles fund a village you are rebuilding, every fight has weight beyond experience points. Winning means the shop opens, the bridge gets fixed, a new character moves in. That feedback loop is quietly addictive.

It also solves the pacing problem that kills so many mobile RPGs. Short on time? Do a quick build task. Got an hour? Dive into a dungeon. The base gives you something meaningful to do at any session length.

More games should steal this idea. A home you care about turns a grind into a project, and projects are far easier to stay attached to.
