Ashgrove Saga

★★★★★ 4.5 Editor rating

Ashgrove Saga surprised me by being as much about the village as the battles. Between fights you rebuild shops, recruit odd characters, and slowly turn a ruined hamlet into somewhere people want to live. It gives the combat a reason to matter.

The battles are turn-based and lean on positioning. Each hero has a small set of abilities, so you are not drowning in menus, but there is real depth in how you stack buffs and interrupts. Boss fights made me rethink my party more than once.

It is a long game, and it knows it. You can play in short bursts thanks to quick saves, and the writing has a warm, slightly funny tone that kept me reading dialogue I could have skipped.
